Of the many early views of the
Scott Monument, stereo and other, this is the only one that I have seen from
this direction, taken possibly from the old North Bridge, looking from the east over Waverley Station.
The railway of the old Canal
Street station can be seen below
Waverley Bridge.
Waverley Bridge runs across the centre of this view, joining Princes Street,
centre-right.
The tunnel mouth of Canal Street
railway station is immediately below the Waverley Bridge junction with
Princes Street. The railway passed beneath Princes Street then beneath
Scotland Street on its way to
Granton Harbour.
The low arches are for a
pedestrian bridge from Princes Street.
The railway lines, carriages,
etc, can be seen underneath this bridge. The squat chimney almost certainly
is for the winding engine that was used to hoist the wagons up the hill
through the tunnels to the station.
