Edinburgh Photographic Company appears in the Trade directories at 1 Hanover Street, 1867-69. However, below is a carte de visite from the company dated 8 June1866. Below is a carte de visite (front and back) of Jessie Aitken, née Wright Jessie Aitken was born at Cowgate, Edinburgh 18 June 1786. It is believed that the message on the back, in black ink - Grandmamma 8th June 1866 - was written by the photographer John Aitken.
John Aitken attended Glasgow Art School, before becoming an apprentice photographer in Edinburgh- possibly at Edinburgh Photographic Company. |

He went on to become a professional photographer in Hawick in the Scottish Borders in 1867, then later established a studio in Glasgow, before retiring in Greenock in the west of Scotland. |
