1st PSS Exhibition, Dec 1856
He exhibited a frame of portraits at the 1856 PSS
Exhibition
The
Aberdeen Journal gave a report of the 1st PSS Exhibition in 1856.
It may have been speaking of James Henderson when it said:
“Mr
Henderson of Blackford near Edinburgh has an easy method of producing colours on
the daguerreotype plate with very simple ingredients.”
“The
great difficulty to overcome is, as we have said, in the permanence of the
colours. Another difficulty is in
the time necessary to impress them - and
when those difficulties shall have been overcome, the Photographic Art will be
within sight of that perfection which seems to be in store for it.” [AJ:24/12/1856]

Tintype |
Thank you to Karl Kiser for sending me a copy of his friend's
tintype photo, which he tells me has 'Henderson, 68
Princes street' embossed on the outer cover.
The photo is behind a golden coloured metal plate with an
oval cut-out to display the photo.
Karl believes that the portrait may be of Elizabeth
MacNiven (born in Edinburgh), grandmother of the owner of the tintype, Craig
White Smith
