Surplus Stock of Cards?
The reason for continuing to refer to the Princes Street address
on his cartes de visite can hardly be attributed to a
surplus of unused cards when he moved from his Princes Street studio.

Even the 25 George Street cdv, above, a new design
incorporating a medal awarded to him 23 years after leaving Princes
Street, referred to the Princes Street address!
Between operating from 137 Princes Street (1856-63) and 25 George
Street (1883-96), John Ross had been based at 4 other studios near the
centre of Edinburgh.
He seems to have decided not to mention any of these on the backs of
his cartes de visite.
These were:
- 1864: 6 Lothian Road
- 1864-65: 5 Hope Street
- 1866-69: 36 Hanover Street
- 1870-82: 3 Great King Street
