Cabinet Prints

Cabinet prints were popular from the late 1860s until around 1900.  They consisted of photos measuring about 4" x 5.5", mounted on trade cards measuring about 4.5" x 6.5".

The photos were usually albumen prints.

Cartes de Visite

Cartes de visite were popular from the 1850s until around 1900.  They consisted of photos measuring about 3.5" x 2.25", mounted on trade cards measuring about 4" x 2.5".

The photos were usually albumen prints.

Post Card  -  Portraits

From early years of the 20th century studios began to produce portraits on post cards, rather than the slightly larger, more substantial Cabinet Prints that had been mounted on thick card in earlier years.

Two volumes of calotype photos, produced by members of the Edinburgh Calotype Club in the 1840s have survived.
