UPDATE

Thank you to Ron Cosens, a collector of early photographs, who wrote:

A Mystery

"This carte de visite in my collection is a mystery:

-  The name and address on the back of of the cdv are:
'Howie & Bonne, 45 Princes Street, Edinburgh'  BUT

- The only legend on the front of the cdv (immediately below the photo) reads:  T.J. Bonne, Photo"

Ron Cosens:  August 21, 2015

Thank you to Ron for also sending me scans of the front and back of this carte de visite.

James Howie Jun.

60 Princes Street

1864-1867 AND 1868-89*

* During the period 1868-89, James Howie Jun. appears to have used the address 60b Princes Street in Edinburgh Trade Directories but 60 Princes Street on the back of his cartes de visite.

Still more Styles of Back

All the James Howie Jun cartes de visite in my own collection have one of the styles of back below.

Howeve I must thank Dr. Glen A. Izett for showing me a different style of James Howie Jun back from a carte de visite held by the Lanark History Society.  This one is similar to the Howie & Bonne backs above so may date from around 1864.  It bears has the words:

HOWIE JUNIOR

60 PRINCES STREET

EDINBURGH

6.

James Howie Jun (Edinburgh and Glasgow studios)

Dr. Glen A. Izett asks if J Howie Jun had a studio in Glasgow in 1860.  He says that it would have been easier for the family in his photo to have visited a Glasgow studio than an Edinburgh studio.

None of his cartes de visite in my collection show this address.  However James Howie jun was listed in the Glasgow trade directories as having a studio at 51 Buchanan Street, Glasgow from 1865 until 1867.  Perhaps some of his photographs from that studio had his Edinburgh address on the back.  How likely is that?

Thank you to Peter Simpson, Brighton, Sussex, England for sending me this example of a James Howie Jun. carte de visit.  On the back the addresses of the Edinburgh and Glasgow studios are both shown.

Questions

I found these two photos of groups, both by James Howie, Jun.  Both were sent to me from  the author of www.cartedevisite.co.uk.  Their owner is keen to know more about these groups.  If you can help, please e-mail me.

Thank you.    -  Peter Stubbs

Howie

45 Princes Street

Howie & Bonne were based at 45 Princes Street, 1863-64.  At other times in the 1860s, this was the address of individual photographers in the Howie family.  I don't know which of them might have produced the cartes de visite below.  There were:

James Howie

1841-65

Mary Howie

1860

Ann Howie

1865
