The Pumping Barge and Little Tug

These moved as each new extension of the suction hose was added

Assembling the Rigid Pipe on the Shore

This photo shows the rigid (steel?) beach lengths of pipe being assembled on shore. There were also heavy-duty flexible sections that were inserted as necessary to allow changes of direction, and I think that a lot of the offshore pipe would have had to have been flexible to allow the barge to be easily moved around to suck up sand and water from different areas of the sea bed.

Looking East towards Joppa

This gives a record of the location of the activity.  Joppa lies at the eastern end of Portobello Beach

The Beach End of the Pipe

The pipe is in situ, but not yet operating.  There appear to be two outlets but I only ever saw one working.

The Initial Low Pressure Feed of Water

This was presumably to test the pipe's integrity. The man perched on the sand above the pipe gives an indication of the size of the pipe's nozzle and baffle.
Cockenzie Power Station can be seen in the background.

Pumping at increased Pressure

Water pressure has been increased, but the flow doesn't appear to contain much sand yet.

Pumping at Full Pressure

Maximum mix of sand to water.  The position of the barge is in roughly the direction of Cockenzie Power Station.
