Cable Car 226

1903:  Built as a cable car for Edinburgh by Dick Kerr Company of Preston.

1923:  Rebuilt as an electric car in 1923.

1938:  Withdrawn and sold by City of Edinburgh Transport Department.

1987:  Rescued for preservation by Lothian Regional Transport  from a field in the Scottish Borders where it had been used as a holiday home.

Restoration

Thank you to John Dickson, Royston, Edinburgh for sending me the three photos above.

In Picture 1, I like the Edinburgh transfer on the side of the side of the tram, and the tram's wrought iron gates!

John tells me that he took Pictures 2 and 3 at LRT's Central Garage in April 1989 for a new works magazine, BUZZ NEWS, started by LRT when the old cable car arrived in Edinburgh.  The upper deck was being detached to make it safer for restoration work to proceed on the roof.

With more emphasis now on 'Health & Safety' we are used to seeing workers wearing hard hats.  I was amused to see that in Picture 3, it was two of the observers, not the man 'high up' who were wearing the hard hats.
