Edinburgh History

Population

Edinburgh  -  An Expanding City

One reason for the increase in Edinburgh's population has been the expanding boundaries of the City.  In early times, Edinburgh was a very small town within the city's walls.

The lower part of the Royal Mile, below the Netherbow, including Holyrood Palace and Abbey was in the borough of Canongate - not Edinburgh.

The city now extends:

-  to the North to include Cramond, Granton, Newhaven and Leith.

-   to the south towards the Pentland Hills

-   to the west to include South Queensferry

-   to the east to include Portobello.
