[etching]
James Hay |
A slight departure has been made from the usual
custom in that the plate is not the product of a photograph, as in former
years, but an etching from a water-colour drawing by our Junior Vice
President, Mr James Hay. |

Johnston |
Ready for distribution: January 1900 to any members presenting their
receipt attached to their membership cards to the Housekeeper.
There had
been a suggestion that the
presentation print should be an etching from a water-colour drawing by James
Hay, rather than a photograph - but EPS appeared to not proceed with this.
Instead,
they selected a negative by J B Johnston from which he produced a
platinotype print entitled 'In Largo Bay' that won the Silver Medal in
the 'Landscape, Seascape and Architecture' section of the 1898
Exhibition. |

Patrick |
The presentation print, now available, is made
from a negative of James Patrick, a carbon print from which gained the
gold medal (the highest award) in the open class for landscapes,
seascapes and architecture in the Society's Annual Exhibition during the
session.

Lewis, Clifton |
The Presentation Print,
available from early 2004 was a photogravure from a negative by Percy
Lewis Clifton, the print being the work of T & R Annan & Sons,
Glasgow.
AGM 1904:
sanctioned the discontinuance of the Presentation Print on the
grounds that it was not appreciated by many of the Members. Instead, the cost of the print (£11 p.a.) is to be paid by
EPS to the Art Union for the purchase of pictures from the Society’s
Annual Exhibition - to be given as prizes.
Prizes
to be:
-
1 x £3 gns
-
1 x £3 gns
-
2 x £3 gns
-
7 x 10/6d
Prize-winners
may select prints to the value of the prizes they have won. |

The November
1907 Transactions of the EPS said it was expected that the
Presentation Print would be ready for the first Meeting; but through
unforeseen circumstances it was ready in time.
The print subsequently became available
during 1908. Copies of this print were offered for sale at 2/6d each. |
I have not found
any reference to any Presentation Prints after 1908, and am surprised
that one was issued in 1908 in view of the comments made at the EPS
Annual General Meeting in 1904 when it was decided to create an
EPS Art Union, rather than
continue to issue Presentation Prints. |
The
years in this table above refer to the years in which the print was
distributed to EPS Members. e.g. 1885 Print is the print that was
distributed early in 1885 to those who had paid their 1884-85
subscriptions.
