'Largest Photographers
in the World'
Brown, Barns & Bell
had studios in Edinburgh from 1881 to 1886.
They
described themselves as 'Art
Photographers and Portrait Painters'.
On the backs of some of
their later photos, they described themselves as the largest photographers in
the world. They listed patents in:

Studios throughout
Britain
Here are dates, so far as I
have been able to discover, when Brown, Barnes & Bell's studios in Britain
operated.
These dates are taken mainly from the
literature listed in this
bibliography, but
supplemented by details provided by Ron Cosens using directories and cartes de visite from his own collection.
Ron has a large collection of cartes de
visite and cabinet prints and has set up this
Carte de Visite web site.
Key to Column 3
All dates in this column are approximate.
+ These dates are based
entirely on cartes de visite that have been seen, rather than entries in
trade directories, so these periods in particular may well be incomplete.
++ The trade directories show Brown,
Barnes & Bell based at 1 Hanover Street, 1881-86, but cartes de visite
from the company at this address, dated 1887 and '88, have also been seen.
The trade directories show
John Duncan Smith, a member of
Edinburgh Photographic Society and a former employee of Brown, Barnes &
Bell, as being the photographer based at 1 Hanover Street for 1877-78.
Perhaps he took over some time in 1877. Perhaps he used some of the old
stock of Brown, Barnes & Bell's carte de visite cards.
