Cabinet Prints
Cabinet Prints were a popular
format of photo from the mid-1860s until around 1900. They usually featured studio portraits, but
Marshall Wane also produced Cabinet Prints of some outdoor events,
including:
- The International Exhibition of Science, Art & Industry, held
in Edinburgh in 1886, for which he was the sole official photographer.
- Sporting events, photographed around the 1880s and 1890s.

Graham asks:
"Can
anyone date these photos with any precision?"
"Does
anyone know where Nos. 3 to 7 might have
been taken?
(I believe that Nos. 1 and 2 would have been taken at Powderhall.)

Thank you to Patrick Hutton
who replied: |
Photos 1 and 2
"Photos 1 and 2 are definitely Powderhall.
The Destructor building is on the left on the skyline. The building
is still there today.
In photo 1, the gasometer that stood where
Blandfield is now (between Macdonald Road and the railway line) can also
be seen."
Photos 3 to 7
"I'll have a think about these photos.
The show jumping photos look familiar."
