Old Edinburgh Exhibit

The international Exhibition of Science, Art and Industry was held at the Meadows, Edinburgh in 1886,

The exhibition included a large 'Old Edinburgh' exhibit, featuring reconstructions of many of the old buildings of Edinburgh, by then demolished.

Marshall Wane had the sole right to take photos of this part of the exhibition.  He published these photos in several different formats:

-  as a book

-  as cabinet prints and cartes-de-visite.

-  as monochrome postcards (early 1900s)

-  as coloured postcards (early 1900s).

Old Edinburgh Mugs

Thank you to Brian Benham for telling me of another 1886 Exhibition souvenir.  Brian wrote:

"I've just researched some old Sowerby (of Gateshead) sand blasted glass souvenir mugs.  These seem to date to about 1886 and were probably issued as souvenirs of the exhibition.

One shows pictures of "Netherport & French Ambassador's House" showing the clock tower as in your web site and the other a picture of the Canongate Tollbooth."

The three postcards above were produced first in 1886 as cabinet prints and cartes de visite.  Later, they were produced as postcard sets.  The same sets were produced both as monochrome cards and colour tinted cards.

Souvenirs

Marshall Wane was not the only person to produce souvenir views of the 'Old Edinburgh' Exhibit at the 1886 Exhibition.  Here are two plaques showing views of this exhibit, produced by Raphael Tuck, a company better known for the many sets of postcards that they produced from 1899 onwards
