Princes Street and the NB Hotel

The View

This view looks to the east along Princes Street towards Waterloo Place and the National Monument on Calton Hill.  The large prominent building on the right with the clock tower is the North British Hotel.

The clock on the tower was (and still is) set three minutes fast, so to prevent  travellers missing their trains at Waverley Station, beneath the Hotel.

The Postcard

This postcard was posted from Carlisle to Edinburgh on 9 January 1905, by a traveller who had left Waverley station late, and so missed the connecting train  from Carlisle to Keswick.  They had a further two hours to wait in Carlisle and described the weather as 'very cold'.
