Location The former Granton Gas Works Station is now part of the Edinburgh Waterfront development. It is situated close to the top of the new road, Waterfront Avenue |
|
Listed Building The building, 1898-1904 (with later 20th century alterations) has been given a 'Category B Listing' by Historic Scotland, who describe it as "Plain Edwardian classical design with Baroque pediment. Red brick with contrasting yellow brick and ashlar sandstone dressings. Bays divided on all sides by giant yellow brick pilasters with fluted ashlar capitals and slightly projecting red brick pedestals with ashlar coping; red brick entablature above with ashlar architrave and eaves cornice. Yellow brick basket arches to ground floor windows; stone sills throughout. INTERIOR: wide flight of stone steps leads down to ground floor from slightly higher entrance; narrower curved stone staircase adjoins to N of present entrance (this was formerly the route taken by workers at the gasworks between the train that transported them here and the site itself - a footbridge at 1st floor level providing the link to the latter)." |

Future Plans Thank you to Patrick Hutton for forwarding this note from Steven Hajducki, City of Edinburgh Council, about plans for future development of the old station building. Steven wrote: "'The former Granton Gas Works station building will be incorporated as the focal point in a development of local shops. Details still to be decided but the intended layout is shown in App 04/02410/FUL, eg on the drawing 'Proposed Site Plan 25 May 06', where it is suggested as a Café / bar facing onto Station Yard." |
