1842

The adverts for shipping, stage coaches, railways and other forms of transport are all taken from the Caledonian Mercury in 1842 make interesting reading.

The railway from London had not yet reached Edinburgh, so there were regular sailings from Edinburgh to London and to Newcastle.

However, 1842 was the year  the Edinburgh-Glasgow railway opened, so providing a quick alternative to the canal and the stagecoach.

LEITH            -  Wednesday 12th January at 3pm  
MONARCH     -  Saturday 8th  January at 3pm

Coaches start from 4 Prince's Street, and from Duty House, foot of North Bridge, and from 47 Bernard Street one hour before the sailing of the Vessel

Now fitting out in the Firth of Fort
 will be on Birth at Leith on Thursday first and will sail in March.

This large vessel has a large full Poop, which will be fitted up with every comfort and convenience for the  accommodation of Cabin Passengers.

There will be an intermediate Cabin if sufficient number of passengers offer; and excellent accommodation for a few in Steerage.

Cabin passengers are recommended to make early application for State-rooms in the Poop.

N.B.  There will be an experienced Surgeon on board.

Opening of the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway on 21 Feb.

1st class  8s,    2nd class  6s,   3rd class  4s,   Carriages  35s,    Horses  15s.

Further fares were advertised one week later:

Four wheeled carriages 30s,     Small Chaise or Drosky  20s,
Two wheeled carriages 15s,     Horses 12s,      Horse box for 3 horses  33s.

Edinburgh, Leith and Newhaven Railway

The Directors of the Edinburgh, Leith and Newhaven Railway announced that "with a view to meeting the demand for conveyance to the Sea Coast on the day of Her Majesty's arrival and during the stay of the Royal Fleet in the Firth, they have resolved to anticipate the opening of the line with LOCOMOTIVES by operating, for this  occasion, [a half-hourly service with CARRIAGES worked by HORSES."
