Opening

A railway line from Edinburgh's Princes Street station to Balerno was built by the Caledonian Railway.  The line opened in 1874.

This line followed the valley of the Water of Leith.

Today

It is now possible to travel along a cycle track from Fountainbridge, near the centre of Edinburgh, following first the canal tow-path to Craiglockhart, then the old track of the old railway to Balerno.
