His

However,
on many of these cartes the name has been scored out in pencil and no
other name added in its place.

William Douglas was based at Douglas's

I have not yet discovered if and how he was related to
Thomas H Douglas.
This is one of many questions I
have concerning the Douglas photographers in Edinburgh. |

Family History
"It
appears likely that Thomas Harigad Douglas
was:
- Artist
- Writer
- Photographer
- Artist
- Writer
in that order, as he went through life.
It also appears likely that this same Thomas H
Douglas was a photographer in both Edinburgh and Glasgow at about the same
time.
Thomas Harigad
Douglas was descended from Sir William Douglas, the 1st Earl of Douglas,
through the Douglas line (as opposed to Angus).
It seems that he was not closely related to
John
Douglas, born 1813 at Dollar, Clackmannan - Snuff Box and Portrait
Painter, Photographer including carte-de-visite, but he was of the same
broad family."

Leith Studio
Thanks for finding that Sally. I
found no record of his Thomas H Douglas' 1884 Leith studio in the
Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directory, probably because he did not stay
there long enough to be listed in the Directory. This studio was the
address of several photographers over a short period in the 1880s.

- 1883: Simpson & Co
- 1884: Thomas H Douglas

Update
Thomas H Douglas'
photography business in Leith soon came to an end. Thank you to
Sally Douglas for sending me an extract from the London Gazette, February
29, 1884 which lists a number 'Scotch Sequestrations' under The Bankruptcy
Act 1883.
This list
includes 'Thomas H Douglas, Leith Photographers, on March 7, 1884'.

Thomas Harigad Douglas had also appeared in
earlier editions of the London Gazette.
- In 1879, the London Gazette
announced an Examination of a Bankrupt, THOMAS HARIGAD DOUGLAS, Searcher
of Public Records, 74,George Street, would take place on March 7, 2012,
and would be followed by a Meeting of the Creditors on March 20, 2012.
London Gazette, Feb
28, 1879
- In 1883, the London Gazette announced
a 'General Meeting of the Creditors on the Sequestrated Estate of THOMAS
HARIGAD DOUGLAS, Searcher of Public Records to be held on June 6, 1883.'
London Gazette, May 15, 1883
I think we now have 'proof' that he was a
Writer, Artist, Searcher of Records and then Photographer, and that he was
Thomas H Douglas of Leith and Edinburgh and most likely of Glasgow."

Thank you to Sally Douglas for also sending me this link to a page on
the

In fact, one of the names on this gravestone may not have been very
legible. Sally points out that the web site lists Douglas as Thomas
M Douglas, but it should be Thomas H Douglas. |

emails received from Sally Douglas
Thanks Sally for all the emails
about Thomas Douglas and family that you have sent to me recently.
I've read them all, but there have been far too many for me to consider
adding to the EdinPhoto web site.
However, I feel that Thomas H Douglas and
his family are already fairly well represented on the EdinPhoto web site,
so I'm not planning to add any more info about him to the site. I
hope you can appreciate my reasons for taking that line. Instead,
I'll concentrate on:
a) catching up on my backlog of outstanding replies that I have
to send to the many other contributors to the EdinPhoto web site.
b) preparing for a couple of Presentation on Photography that I'm
due to give in Jan + Feb 2013. (I plan to also add these
presentations to the EdinPhoto web site when they are ready.)
c) taking more of my own photos, and adding them to the EdinPhoto
web site.
Thomas H Douglas
British Journal of Photography
Amongst the 103 emails about
Thomas H Douglas and family that Sally Douglas has sent to me over the
past ten days (18-27 Dec) there are several that include extracts
from the British Journal of Photography, most from 1867.
It is interesting to know that
Thomas H Douglas features in these accounts, but so also do many other
early Edinburgh photographers, both amateur and professional.
I don't plan to introduce
duplication by quoting extensively from the BJP on the EdinPhoto web site.
Fortunately, early editions of the BJP are available from some of the
major reference libraries, and the BJP had a good annual index, so it can
be fairly easy to find articles about individual photographers in
the journal.
Other Photographers
British Journal of Photography
I've spent a lot of time, over
the years, browsing with interest through early editions of the BJP,
tracing the development of photography in Britain and of British
photographic societies. The BJP has provided me with a wealth of
material.
If anyone wished to investigate
the work of some of the early photographers, the BJP might be a good place
to start.
e.g. it might be
interesting to research some of the pioneering work of some of the
Edinburgh photographers, such as James
James Good Tunny. He carried out his own experiments and
taught photography to others in Edinburgh in the 1850s. Some of the
claims he made for his own achievements were disputed at the time by
others in the BJP.
Peter Stubbs, Edinburgh: December 27, 2012
Update
Before anybody takes up my suggestion above
that some research might be done into the work done by pioneering
photographers such as James Good Tunny
in Edinburgh, I should point out that
Julian Bukits, Southside, Edinbrugh has
already been researching the history
of South Clerk Street, Edinbrugh, and in particular the life and work of
James Good Tunny.
Julian has written extensive notes on Tunny, and has now added some
of these notes to his James Good
Tunny web site.
