Valentine's

Photography around the World

Valentine's views were of Scottish scenes until, in 1882, they expanded into England.

Over the next twenty years, they moved to tourist areas abroad, including:

-  Jamaica

-  Medeira

-  Norway

-  Tangier

-  New Zealand

New Zealand

George Dobson Valentine emigrated to New Zealand in 1884.  He produced 250 photos there over 6 years.  He died there in 1890.

Canada

1.

Thank you to Patrick Sheedy who used to live in Manitoba, Canada for e-mailing me a postcard of Pontoon Bridge, Elm Park, Winnipeg, Manitoba. The photograph was taken pre-1914.

Dates of Valentine's Cards published Overseas

Unfortunately, the 'University of St Andrews VALENTINE COLLECTION' booklet, which I have found to be very helpful in dating Valentine's black and white British postcards explains:

"With a few exceptions, the overseas views were assigned to other sequences whose registers are not preserved in St Andrews University Library and which were probably not housed in Valentine's Dundee office"

So, I'm unlikely to be able to help anybody wishing to know the publications dates of any of their Valentine postcards that were published overseas.

Isle of Man

The www.isle-of-man.com web site gives a brief summary of photography in the Isle of Man undertaken by James Valentine, one of the founding members of Edinburgh Photographic Society.

Having entered the Isle of Man web site, you will have to click on 'Manx Notebook' then 'Tourism' then 'Post Cards' to find the Valentine details.

Scotland and England

Valentine Collection

St Andrews University Library  holds an archive of Valentine black and white photographs and postcards.  The Library has produced an informative booklet entitled:

University of St Andrews

Valentine Collection.

On this web site, I have included some key dates in the Company's history, taken from booklet above.
