The Streets

I've returned to these street many times in recent

Often when travelled around Edinburgh
photographing shops and restaurants, I found cars parked
in front of them.
Usually, I would return later, but if I felt that
the car matched the shop, I took the photo.

By August 1996, the name of the restaurant had changed from
'Spices' to 'Hafiz.
but the name 'Spices' still appeared on the metal plaque
beside the door.

Shops and Cars |
One of the problems that I
encountered in photographing shops was that there were often cars parked in
front of them, so I might have to return several times before I could take the
photo that I wanted.
Then I found some cars with a bit
more character parked in front of the shops.

I also found that the colours of some of the cars matched the
colours of the shops:

I particularly liked the Citroen 2CVs. They were small so
did not get in the way of the shop and they came in an attractive
range of colours. Here are three that I photographed around
Edinburgh.

Street Furniture |
I've taken an interest in street furniture around
Edinburgh, and have been taking photos of:
- Lamp Posts
- Road Signs
- Post Boxes
- Telephone Boxes
- Police Boxes
I've photographed all the police boxes (See
table below) and followed the progress of some, as
they have been sold to the public then converted into coffee stalls and
for other uses. |

Thank you to Neil Lawrence for
also noticing that there was also a picture on the right-hand side of this box,
and photographing it for me (below). Calton Hill and the Scott
Monument can be seen in the background of this picture
I returned to check what was
on the back of the box (the side that's against the wall) but found that
it was still painted blue. |
