Fountain
Facing Edinburgh Castle Esplanade, at the top of Castlehill |
This fountain on the side of the old reservoir at the top of
Castlehill includes symbols of evil and wisdom: a serpent,
foxglove spray, wicked head and serene head.
The inscription above the fountain explains that it is near the
site on which many witches were burnt at the stake.

Old Town Weaving
Near the top of Castlehill, Edinburgh,
in a building that was once a covered reservoir |
This building, at the top of the Royal Mile was a large indoor
reservoir until about 25 years ago. Now, it is the home to
weaving companies. It has a large sales floor below ground
level, and looms in the basement below the sales floor.

The Writers' Museum
Lady Stair's Close, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh |
The Writers' Museum is housed in Lady Stair's House, a 17th
century building originally known as Lady Gray's House. The
building is beside James Court, off Lawnmarket.
The building was restored in 1896-97, then gifted to the
Borough of Edinburgh for use as a municipal museum. It now
presents the lives of three Scottish writers:
- Robert Burns
- Walter Scott
- Robert Louis Stevenson

Gladstone's Land
483
Lawnmarket, Edinburgh |
Thomas Gledstane
This building at 483 Lawnmarket was originally built in 1550. It was
bought by Thomas Gledstane, who extended and redeveloped it in 1617. He
lived in part of the building and rented out other parts of it.
In 1934 the building was condemned and scheduled for demolition, but was
rescued by the National Trust for Scotland who bought it, fully restored it,
fitted it with period decoration and furniture and opened it to the public as
'Gladstone's Land'.
Mounted to the front wall of the building is a gilt-copper hawk with
outstretched wings holding a mouse in its claws. 'Gled' (as in Gledstane)
is the Scots word for .hawk'.
