Norwegian Royal Visit to Edinburgh

1994

In July 1994, King Harold and Queen Sonja of Norway visited Edinburgh.

One of the events during their visit was a procession of coaches and horses up the Royal Mile with Queen Elizabeth and King Harold in one of the coaches followed by the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Sonya in the coach behind.

I stood on the steps outside John Knox house to take  few photos of the procession approaching up the Canongate.

There were horses   -  then coaches ...

Coaches

The crowd soon dispersed.  After a short while, I was surprised to hear the coaches approaching, on their way back to Holyrood but this time without the Royalty.

In what appeared to be a well planned operation, the streets were soon cleaned after the horses.  An impressive array of vehicles came down the Royal Mile, first sweeping the sand off the cobbled street then washing the street.

The photo was sent to me with the suggestion that the 'White Horse Close' caption was incorrect.  However, I can confirm that the view is indeed White Horse Close.

Most photos of White Horse Close (including all those above on this page) look from near the entrance to the close at Canongate towards the buildings on the north side of the close.

However, the photo below looks in the opposite direction, back towards the buildings in the NE corner of the close.  For anybody walking into White Horse Close and looking for this building, "It's behind you !"

4.  Unknown Photographer

Late-1800s?

The next photo is the same view as photo 3 above.  A gable end of the old building has  been taken down but most of the building is still standing and is instantly recognisable.
