I've not gone around Edinburgh again, visiting all the police box
locations, to see which boxes have been removed following recent
sales. However, Neil Lawrence has now sent me the message
below.

One has re-appeared on the south side of George Square as a coffee
kiosk. Do you have any idea what has happened to the other
one?"

Hi Neil.
1. I don't know where the other police box that you mention
is now. Perhaps somebody will find it then send a message to
me. If they do, I'll add their message to this page.
2. You refer to the new box, installed this year at George
Square. I took photos of that box being installed at the
SW corner of George Square early in 2014. I passed it again a
few weeks later and photographed it in use as a coffee stall.
I
spoke to the person serving the coffee and asked him if he knew
where the box had been situated previously. He said he
understood that it had come out of storage.

Hi Neil.
I'll see if I can discover where that Police Box came from.
However, I'll not add Straiton to the list of locations above.
I'm only listing the boxes on the streets in Edinburgh on that list.

Planning Applications
"I checked with the Planning Department
today. Lots of applications for siting police boxes at
new locations have been refused or withdrawn"
Lauriston Place and
Morrison Street
"A couple of Applications have been
granted, but the police boxes have not materialised at their new
locations, outside the Blood Donation Centre at Lauriston Place and
opposite the EICC extension on Morrison Street."
Cowgate
"The police box on the Cowgate, at the
foot of High School Yards steps, is away, It is due to
re-appear further up the road near the morgue, pretty much where it
used to sit before they moved it.
The move is apparently something to do
with bringing it inside the boundary of the UNESCO World Heritage
Site.
Straiton
"The police box that I saw at Straiton
must be a new addition, as I don’t see it on Aerial Photos or Google
Street View, It's an interesting one as it had the old light on top,
which is pretty rare.
I'll get a picture when I head up to
Stewart Brewing next.

-
Croal Place box,

-
Pier Place box at Newhaven, to be

"My box (Newhaven Harbour box) is going
to get a repaint in summer and is going to be a small art studio for
myself and other to make and display art from.
The launch of the Newhaven box, on 29th
May, will be in 2 parts:
- 2-5 pm: a circus and
comedy event aimed at children.
- 7-9 pm: a comedy story
telling night with stories from locals.
The festival at Newhaven, on 4-5 July
2015, will have lots of different events happening simultaneously at
all the boxes within the group for the 2 days. With box owners
wooing off their creative produce or having performances to

Police Box
Festival
4 + 5 July,
2015
Admission Free
"This
year, for the first time, several of the owners of the former Police
Boxes have come together to stage a Police Box Festival. They
hope that this might become an annual event, and that other owners
will join them in future years.
Ten Police Boxes are
included in the festival this weekend. Brief details about the
what can be seen at each of the boxes. A map showing their
locations was provided on the Edinburgh
ex-Police Boxes web site, but the map appears to have now been
removed from the Internet. The Edinburgh Evening News also
reported on the plans for the festival (Fri.
3 July, 2015: pp.3 + 27)
I visite several of
the boxes today.
- I saw
pictures of Newhaven (and some knitting!) in and beside the box in
Pier Place, Newhaven Harbour.
- I saw and
heard a variety of musical instrument being played outside the box
at Lauriston Place / Middle Meadow Walk.
- I heard more
live music behind the box that sells soup at St Patrick's Square,
near the former Odeon Cinema.
- I learnt
about a charity that has created a 'Tool LIbrary', the first in
Britain, when I visited the box at Shrub Place.
- I saw
books donated by the National Library of Scotland on display on
shelves inside the box at Drummond Street, part of a project to
encourage reading.
- I heard
recordings of bird songs, taken along the Water of Leith, inside the
box beside the Water of Leith at Canonmills.
I took a few photos. Maybe, one
day, I'll find the time to add some of them to the EdinPhoto web
site. I enjoyed visiting the boxes today. I hope you do,
if you decide to visit any of them tomorrow.
