EPS Outing

Winton Castle - 1876

The report below is an extract from an article in the British Journal of Photography:

Annual Holiday

An annual holiday, which has now become an institution in Edinburgh, came off on Thursday 27 July, with, if possible, more than the usual éclat.

A party, a little short of the usual number assembled at Waverley Station at 9.15 and went off by special train to Winton Castle, the seat of Hon Lady Ruthven.

The business began with luncheon, in which Mr Muir's annual gift of beer was an important element

Group Photographs

Three groups were taken by Mr Annan on 16 x 12 plates, and one of a smaller size by Mr Turnbull.

[Tea was served at 5pm.]

After another hour spent on the bowling-green the proceedings were brought to a close by the time-honoured singing of 'Auld Lang Syne'.  The party was then formed into fours, and marched past Lady Ruthven, who had again come out, and they gave her three ringing cheers by way of goodbye.

The station was reached by 7.15, and in a few minutes the train, which had been waiting, started on the homeward journey reaching Edinburgh at eight o' clock.
