The EPS Members travelled by special train to Winton Castle for their Annual Excursion on 18 July 1878 - Gentlemen 7/6: Ladies 5/-

Here are some comments on the outing to Winton Castle, given at the 1878 AGM. [BJP: 15 November 1878, p.548]

"The Annual Excursion was pre-eminently successful. A company numbering over one hundred spent a most enjoyable day at Winton Castle, the beautiful grounds surrounding that very fine old historical mansion being thrown open by the special favour of Lady Ruthven."

The British Journal of Photography gave a fuller account of the excursion the week after the event: [BJP: 26 July 1878, p.353.]

The event included games as well as photography. A 1st and 2nd prize was awarded for each of the games:

- Bowls

- Skipping Rope

- Battledore

- Spelling Bee

- Ladies' Race

- Gentlemen's Race

- Hop Step & Leap

- Sack Race

The professional photographer WD Young was:

- 1st the bowls
- 2nd in the sack race.

The runner up in the bowls was GM Campbell. Was this the professional photographer George Campbell?

The winner of the sack race was W Mathison. Was he related to the Edinburgh professional photographer Alexander Mathison

Drinks

The bill below is dated 8 July and is signed by Alex Morrison. He was EPS Treasurer for two years from November 1877. So it is likely that the provisions were for a Summer Outing in 1877 or 1878 - perhaps for the Annual Excursion to Winton Castle on 18 July 1878.
