Lieutenant Thomas, late Captain Thomas RN joined the Photographic Society of Scotland in 1856, the year the Society was founded.  He remained  member until the Society was wound up in 1873.

F W L Thomas had an Edinburgh address,  Ivy Lodge, Trinity Crescent, Trinity.  This is in the northern suburbs of Edinburgh, beside the Firth of Forth.

At Sea

F W L Thomas worked for the Admiralty, charting the waters around the Western Isles of Scotland.  He sailed with Captain Otter on HMS Porcupine to St Kilda, an island in the Atlantic Ocean, 110 miles off the north-west of Scotland.  He took the earliest photographs ever taken of St Kilda.

TV Documentary Programme

A TV Documentary Programme based loosely around photographs by F W L Thomas  taken in August 1860 is scheduled to be broadcast at 7.30pm on 10 June 2004 on Grampian Television.
