This photograph of James Drummond is a calotype taken by 
Hill & Adamson between 1843 and 1847.

Background

James Drummond was born in 1816 in John Knox House in the Royal Mile, Edinburgh. 

He studied at the Trustees' Academy in Scotland under Sir William Allan.

He produced a series of drawings of Old Edinburgh, later published as lithographs. 

He became a Member of the Photographic Society of Scotland and of the Society of Antiquaries.

From 1868 to 1877, he was Curator of the National Gallery of Scotland.

James Drummond RSA was a PSS Member, and a Member of the Society's Council in 1857-58.

City Art Centre

The City of Edinburgh Art Collection, held by the City Art Centre includes:

pencil sketches:  -  for 'Sabbath Evening' and 'Napier, the Inventor of Logarithms'.

sepia and pastel:  'Crombies Court, Crombies Land, West Port''

watercolour:  'Whisky Row, Edinburgh' and 'College Wynd, 1852'

oil on canvas:  'Sabbath Evening'  and 'Tam o' Shanter'

Edinburgh Room

The Edinburgh Room at Edinburgh Central Library has a collection of pencil and wash drawings of closes, winds, streets and buildings of Edinburgh by Drummond.

These were drawn between 1848 and 1859 and published in 1879 as lithographs by Ballingall in a folio volume entitled  'Old Edinburgh'.
