A Few

Recollections

Frank Ferri, Newhaven, Edinburgh, wrote:

Co-op Milk Deliveries

"You collected your large wheeled bar off a pend at the collecting point at Bowling Green Street.  You had a deliver book and a load of milk, usually about four crates containing a dozen pint bottles in each crate. It was a heavy load for a wee skinny laddy like me.

The barrow had a long piece of metal suspended from the front of it, that acted as a break or stop.  Bangor Road was a steep hill.  If the barrow got away from you there and you let the front down too suddenly, it would tip over, scattering the whole load of milk all over the street."

The route back to base was via Bangor Lane, which had a pillar in the centre of it to stop vehicles accessing.  The gap between the wall and this pillar was barley enough to get the barrow through and you had to take a run at it because it was up a hill.

Ian M Malcolm, St Andrews, Fife, Scotland, wrote:

Student Digs

1947

"At the end of August, I moved to the tenement home of Mr and Mrs Brown at 19 Constitution Street.  Although it was a poor area, the digs were comfortable and I was treated like a member of the family.

I couldn't care less about the decoration.  I had a small table to work on  and a small electric fire to keep me warm, all for about 30 bob (£1.50) a week.

Almost everybody listened to 'Forces Favourites' at Sunday lunch time."

Frank Ferri, Newhaven, Edinburgh, wrote:

Our Wireless

"Popular brands of the old acid battery powered wireless were Phillips, Baird and Bush.

The accumulator (battery) was made of thick glass, with a wire carrying handle, and it’s internal components were much the same as that found in a car battery.

When the battery had run out of power, I was sent to carry this heavy acid-filled container, with the wire grip cutting into my fingers and awkwardly holding it away from my body so as not to burn myself with any acid leakage, to the wee cobbler's shop situated in a basement area at the top Bangor Road.

I think his name was Frame.  He charged six pence for a half- charge and nine pence for a full charge."
