Update

Milk Horses

Thank you to Kate Love, who was in the audience at the Broughton History Society talk last week, for telling me that each of the horses being considered to operate the Co-op's milk rounds in Edinburgh had first to be offered to the Queen.  Some of these horses might turn out to be a good match for her existing horses for the Royal Carriages, in which case they would join the Queen's Stables.

One of the horses offered to the Queen in this way, but declined, was 'Ginger' who went on to become a familiar sight delivering milk around the streets of Broughton until the late 1980s.

Ginger was retired to Leven, Fife, at the age of 34 when the Co-op's horse drawn milk delivery service came to an end 1985.  Here is a photo of him taken on the farm at Leven:

Carriage Restoration

I visited the co-op's Carriage Restoration Workshop at Angle Park Terrace a few times in the 1990s, and was told by one of the workers there that their restoration work had included:

-  their own vehicles:  milk floats, Santa's sleigh, a hearse, etc.

-  vehicles occasionally individuals (but not very many of these).

-  the Queen's coaches.  (The Co-op had a contract with the Royal Family to restore all of their coaches.  They had been doing this for many years, but by the 1990s, they had almost run out of Royal coaches in need of restoration.)

With no more milk floats in operation in Edinburgh since 1985 little chance of many more coaches to restore for Buckingham Palace, there was concern about the future of Scotmid's carriage restoration workshops.  In fact the workshop closed a couple of years after my last visit there in the 1990s.

Trams

Tram
1.

The First Cable Car at Pilrig  -  1898

For the next 22 years, passengers would have to change tram at Pilrig as there was no through operation between Leith and Edinburgh.
Edinburgh's Cable Cars would operate on Leith Walk  to the north of Pilrig and Leith Electric Trams would operate to the south of Pilrig.
The two systems were not compatible.

Bonnington Toll  -  Probably around early-1950s?

Bonnington Toll was where Broughton Road, Newhaven Road, Bonnington Road and Pilrig Street met at the northern corner of Rosebank Cemetery.

The railway crossed diagonally over the road junction here.

Day Time Tram Testing at York Place

The last of the old trams ran in November 1956.  Here, almost 60 years later, is one of Edinburgh's new trams being tested in February 2014, before going into service in May 2014.

This view from the top floor o Harvey Nicol's shows a tram turning from York Place into North St Andrew Street.

This tram is negotiating the same corner as the tram in Photo 2 above, but is heading towards St Andrew Square.  It was photographed from the top floor of Harvey Nicol.
