"I've worked for many years for
motoring companies in Edinburgh. I believes that this
car may have been put together by the St Stephen's Motor & Cycle Depot
using parts from different models"

Engel Nelson, Clermiston, Edinburgh, wrote:
"My father is the small boy in this photo.
He looks to be aged about 4, so the photo would have been taken
around 1912. The owner of the shop was Anton Engelbrecht Neilson,
an immigrant from Scandinavia. He is 2nd from the left in this
photo.
My father told me that
the car was owned by a local doctor, and that
the make was a 'Striker' or 'Straker'."
|
Mike Budd, National Motor Museum, Hampshire write:
"We have
not, unfortunately, been able to establish beyond doubt that this is a
Straker-Squire, but the layout of the bodywork is similar to models
produced by that firm in Bristol, between 1908 and 1912.
During
this period the cars were available with both wood-spoked and wire wheels,
although the latter were more common in the later years.
The car
in question does not have a windscreen fitted; rather surprisingly a
number of Strakers in photographs of this period seem to have been driven
in such a manner.
The
large lamps fitted suggest a fair amount of night driving and perhaps it
was felt that a glass screen (pre-wiper days remember) impaired visibility
at night.."

A Few
Recollections
Dorothy Land, née Jeremy, Suffolk, England: |
My Grandmother
"My grandparents lived in Leslie
Place, Stockbridge. My grandmother cleaned for a few
well-to-do ladies and they gave her their old coats. She would then
cut them down to make coats and jackets for her children and the
neighbours' children.
Everyone helped everyone else
out. They were all in the same boat." |
Peter Gilchrist wrote: |
Milk Deliveries
"I
stayed at Leslie Place from birth 1944 to marriage 1966 and remember
the milk cart well. I helped the milkman, whose name was
Jimmy, to deliver the milk to our street and St,. Bernard's
Crescent."

Eddy Duffy, Fox Covert, Edinburgh
added |
"Jimmy, the
milkman, delivered milk for St. Cuthbert's, with his horse
Falcon. I was sometimes allowed to help Jimmy on a Saturday
and sit on the seat on the cart . It seemed very high up to a
10 year old." |
Frank Ferri, Newhaven, Edinburgh,
wrote: |
The Barber
"Ottie
Gall, the barbers, was in Raeburn Place. (It's still there, as if
preserved in aspic with its wood-panelled individual booths.) It was
for old men.
I was taken to get my hair cut
at Bob's in Tollcross where I'd be
allowed to have it styled in a quiff like Billy J Kramer!" |
Allan Dodds, Nottingham,
Nottinghamshire |
The Steamie
"I remember the 'Steamies'.
There was one in
Henderson Row, just before
the Edinburgh Academy. Women in headscarves and a 'fag'
hanging from the lower lip, wheeling pram frames containing tin tubs
full of dirty laundry, used to frequent it.
