Recent Years

Routes 26 and X26 were first branded with red roofs, a large diagram of the route on the back of each bus and heart shaped logos with the strap line:

"East to West through the Heart of the City"

Route branding for Lothian Buses, Route 26 - 2005 ©

At a later date the branding was changed.  The new livery for this route still had a red roof.  Ten of the buses for service 26 were given 'all over' adverts for Edinburgh zoo.  There were two for each of the themes:

-  Ape

-  Lorikeet

-  Penguin

-  Tiger

-  Zebra

I believe that the ten buses above with the 'all over' Ape, Lorikeet, Penguin, Tiger and Zebra adverts were repainted into the new Lothian Buses livery around March / April 2014.

I saw what appeared to be the first of a batch of route 26 buses in new livery today - new style Lothian Buses livery but with red roofs.

Old Route

In 1987 (and other years?), the Service 26 termini were  Clerwood and Tranent (Muirpark),
but many of the buses ran from, Clerwood only as far as Eastfield.

 Other Bus Services

I've only just begun to add  photos to the three sections above. I intend to add more photos later.

Part Routes

Also listed below are 'Part Route termini'.  I plan to photograph those that are used most frequently, e.g. for all Sunday services, but not the remainder.

Many are used only very occasionally, perhaps for one or two buses per day in the early mornings.

Larger Pictures Available

After looking at any of the photos below, you might like to try clicking on some of the 'Enlarge this picture' links.  They should take you to larger copies of the photos, i.e. 1024 pixels (rather than 640 pixels) for the  longest side.

'Lothian Buses'

formerly Lothian Region Transport

I thought it might be interesting to photograph all the Lothian Buses termini in 2007, then see how these places change over the years.

The bus routes now extend further from the city centre now than they did a few years ago, to places such as Tranent, Gorebridge, Penicuik and Balerno, often reaching the areas where the edges of the housing developments where the fields begin.

'Lothian Buses' operate flat fares.  These offer very good value for some of the longer journeys.  The fares now (April 1, 2009) are:

-  £1.20 (70p child) for most single journeys on Lothian Buses.

-  £3.00 for a ticket allows travel throughout the day on most Lothian Buses.

Map

At some stage I hope to add a map to the EdinPhoto web site, linked to some of the photos above.  I have obtained permission  to include such a map, but have no idea when I'm going to find the time needed to add it to the site.

Bus Liveries

The buses in the photos are in one of two liveries.

-  The older buses are painted in the traditional 'madder and white' colours that have been used for many decades, or in the case of Route 15, a variation on this livery,  red ('tomato soup' shade) and white.

-  The newer, low-floor buses that now, in 2009, form most of the fleet, are in a new 'harlequin' livery, first introduced in the 1990s.

In recent years, some of these buses have been painted in variations of the harlequin livery, with different colour roofs and themes to give distinctive route branding to some of the routes.

This branding follows the theme of a pack of cards:  Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds, Spades, Leader of the Pack, etc.

More Photos Later

I have now photographed almost all the Lothian Buses termini, but have not yet found the time to add to this page, when I can find the time to add them.

The photos on this page have been taken from March 2007 onwards.  The locations of the termini listed above change from time to time.  For details of Lothian Buses' services today, please see the Lothian Buses web site.
