Early Photos

Here is a very early photo of the Old Chain Pier. The photo comes from one of two albums of small calotype prints to have survived from the Edinburgh Calotype Club, believed to be the earliest photographic society in the world.

The Old Chain Pier was built in 1821 and destroyed in a storm in 1898

The original Booking Office, at the landward end of the pier survived until 2004 when it was destroyed in a fire.  It was  restored and is now open under new management.

The next 7 photos are all calotypes taken 1843-47 by the Hill & Adamson partnership.

David Octavius Hill was the artist.

Robert Adamson was the technician.

-  Their studio was at Rock House, beside the foot of the steps to Calton Hill.

Photographic Studios

Newhaven fisherwomen's outfits were popular with Edinburgh's professional photographers for many decades.

Some of the photographers had Newhaven fishwives' costumes that visitors to their studios could be photographed in.

The usual sizes of photo produced by the photographic studios were::

Cartes de visite  (small prints mounted on card) from late-1850s to around 1900.

Cabinet prints (larger prints mounted on card) from late-1860s to around 1900.

These early cartes de visite by John Ross are unusual in that they have been hand-tinted.

The titles of these are "Caller Ou" and "Caller Haddies".  Both are terms that appear in songs sung by the Newhaven Fishwives Choir.

I don't know whether these sitters would have been genuine Newhaven fishwives or whether they might just have been dressed as fishwives.

Early-20th Century

Postcards

Here, we have a selection of postcards by Valentine and others, most probably published between around 1900 and 1914.

Some are views of individual fishwives with their baskets and creels;  others are groups or families of fishwives and, in just one case, fishermen.

All the cards will have used black & white photographs, but most of them have been hand-tinted.

Fishwives standing and chatting in the streets was another popular subject for Newhaven postcards.

These were usually hand-coloured, with some artistic licence used in the colouring.  (I have several copies of the same card, but with the house colours and costume colours being quite different from one card to another.)

Almost all the street scenes featuring fishwives appear to have been taken in New Street.

Newhaven Fishmarket

beside Newhaven Harbour

I had been under the impression that Newhaven Fishmarket,  beside Newhaven Harbour had closed many years ago.

Then I discovered that it was still trading - but the day's trading was always finished before I got out of bed!

So I went along to the market at about 5am for a few days, and took the photos below:

Harry Ramsden's Restaurant

beside Newhaven Harbour

When I took the photos above, the whole building was a fishmarket, but this provided far more space than was needed for the trading.

So the building was renovated and split into three sections:

-  South (near the camera):  A Harry Ramsden fish restaurant.

-  Centre:  Newhaven Heritage Museum.

-  North:  The Fishmarket (reduced in size).
