Beginning 2002
I launched the
EdinPhoto web site in February 2001, some time before the days of
Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and the many other social media sites.
Here are a few
stats about the number of visitors to the site and pages viewed on the
site from March 2002 onwards. (That's the first date form which I
have been able to obtain reliable stats about use of the site.)

I found it interesting
to look at the % of visitors who found the EdinPhoto web site by using different
search engines at:
- Mar 2002
(the earliest month for which I have stats) and
- Dec 2013
(the latest month for which I have stats).
Over this period, Google
has become even more dominant, squeezing out most of its early competitors.

Brief History
This brief summary covers all the years for
which I have reliable stats for the web site.
Briefly, it shows that
the number of visitors to the site, and the number of pages they viewed:
- increased
steadily up to about 2007
- then gradually
declined up to about 2011
- and have then
remained fairly level.

Possible Reason for the
Decline
Perhaps the decline in the number of
visitors to the site and the number of pages viewed during the period 2007 to
2011 was the result of some of the visitors moving to social media web sites
that had not previously existed. e.g.
- Twitter was launched in 2005
- You Tube was launched in 2005
- Facebook was launched to the public
in 2006.
It would have taken these sites a while to gain a sizeable
membership following their launch.
Promoting the EdinPhoto web
site
I've not advertised the web site, or made
any attempt to promote it (other than by referring to in on my Twitter pages
over the past month to see if this might halt any decline in the use of
the EdinPhoto web site).
The site is already generating more emails for me than I am
comfortably able to cope with, so I don't plan to take any steps to try to
increase the number of visitors to the site.

The way in which people
have made use of the EdinPhoto web site does not seem to have changed very
significantly over the years.
However, the proportion
of people staying on the site for a long time and the proportion looking
at a large number of pages has certainly increased over the years.
