Results are not available for September 2018 !
Each month since 2002, I've compiled a report
showing the number of visitors to the EdinPhoto web site and pages most viewed
during the previous month.
I've based these reports on stats provided by
MatrixStats, a package provided by FastHosts, the company that hosts my web
site.
Until about a year ago I had a good understanding
of these stats, but then the stats started to show that quite a lot of people
viewing the site, but each was viewing ZERO pages!
This appears to relate to systems which have been
visiting the site and extracting pictures from it presumably automatically,
without viewing any of the pages on the site. (People making visits to the
site without viewing any pages are known as 'spongers'.)
For the past few months I have been excluding
figures for these automatic visits from the monthly stats that I have reported,
but I've not made any attempt to stop the pictures from being taken from the
site because I don't know how to do that. and I've not had the resources to
investigate further.
Problem - September 2018
The problems above of people extracting pictures
from the site without my permission have continued, but there also seems to have
been a lot more abnormal activity on the site over the past month.
MatrixStats gives me a list of pages viewed each
month, and how many views there have been for each page. This list usually
just lists the page names for pages viewed on the site, and gives stats for
each, e.g.
/4/4eps_exhibitions_dates_1971-2000.htm
/5/8_what's_new__all_updates.htm
However, during September the list also includes
many entries that refer to items other than web site pages. e.g.
/wp-login.php
/wp/wp-admin/
/wordpress/wp-admin/
/old/wp-admin/
/blog/wp-admin
admin/Cms Wysiwyg/directive/index/
/plus/ad js.php
/blog/
/user.php
/cm.php
/wordpress/
/wp/
/cm.php
/_
/plus/read.php
/administrator/index
/vendor/phpunit/phpunit/src/Unil/PHP/asd.php
/include/dialog/select soft post.php
/wp-/content/uploads/settingsimages/2018/09/W3C/DTDXHTML
...
/zoomla/administrator/index/php
/license.php
/config/AspCms Config.asp
/phpMyAdmin/scripts/setup.php
/5/ccccccccccccccccccccccc
/plus/moon.php
... and many more. I've no idea what
has been happening. I'm still receiving a regular flow of emails from
people who have been viewing the site and it appears from these that the site is
still working well for them, but something else seems to be going on as well.
I have no expertise in this area, and no time to
start learning about it, but I'll try contacting FastHosts, and see if they can
throw any light on what might have been happening.
Meanwhile, I'll not attempt to produce any more
of my monthly stats pages because I feel that the results taken from Matrixstats
under current conditions could be misleading.
If, instead, you'd like to look at stats for
earlier months, you'll find links to them below.
I'm sorry to have to pass on this news to you.
There are other things that I would prefer to be doing, rather than looking into
problems like this!
