The Mound Precinct in the 1840s

1843

The Mound Precinct has a long history for providing entertainment.

Charles Halkerston (d.1899), produced an oil painting of the Mound Precinct in 1843.  The painting showed a diorama, with an advert for:

Jerusalem and Thebes

and

The Battle of Waterloo

There was also a travelling menagerie and  an elephant with a board on its back advertising:

Botanical Gardens

A Grand Fete Tonight

Fireworks

1844

A large statue of Queen Victoria by Sir John Steell was added to the roof of the Royal Institution, now the Royal Scottish Academy, in 1844.
