Photographic
Exhibitions
1850s
The
Photographic Society of Scotland was established
in 1856 and held its first annual Photographic
Exhibition in December that year.
It found that it was faced
with a rival attraction in the form of the Art Manufactures
Exhibition. The Press carried adverts for this exhibition,
describing it as:
“The
Art”
in the New National Galleries
After
dusk, the Galleries will be brilliantly lighted by gas
tapestries, wood carvings,
moldings, &c.”
Admission
1/-: children 6d.

In
subsequent years, some of Edinburgh's professional photographers became
dissatisfied with the Photographic Society of Scotland's exhibitions, and
decided, instead, to exhibit their work at "The Art".
