1.  Athaia

This site has directories of Cities, Climate, News, Maps, Websites, etc. for over 250 countries around the world.

2.  Camera Manual Store

This site sells old camera documents.  It also includes links to many web sites on photography that may be of interest.

These are grouped into about 25 categories, covering both photographic equipment and images.

3.  Edinburgh Maps  -  Current

For maps of Edinburgh and elsewhere in Britain today, I recommend the Multimap web site.

The Multimap site displays maps for post-codes.  It also has Edinburgh web-cams.

4.  Edinburgh Maps  -  Historic

For old maps of Edinburgh and elsewhere I recommend the NLS map site.

This site displays many images from the National Library of Scotland's extensive collection of maps.

5.  Geograph   A NEW LINK

This web site displays  photos for each 1 km grid square on the Ordnance Survey maps of Britain.

-  Go to the Geograph search page

-   Key in your chosen grid square e.g. NT2377 for the square that includes Granton Square and Granton Harbour

-  Click search to see the photos.

6.  Old Maps

This Old Maps web site is provided by Landmark Information Group.  It provides access to a wide range of old and recent Ordnance Survey maps which can be accessed using place names, addresses or co-ordinates.

It may also be a useful way of finding postcodes for addresses in the UK.

The site includes 1854 maps, modern maps and aerial views, and  can zoom-in and zoom-out.

7.  Photoclicks Photography Directory

This directory site has useful links to over 1,000 photography web sites, sorted into fifty categories:  aerial, architectural, digital, fine art, history, infrared, landscape, wildlife, etc.

8.  Photography Resources

This directory of web sites on the internet has been created by Blake Webster whose message is "Explore photography through the internet."

The Photography Resources site groups other photographic sites on the internet into categories.  There are now more than  200 different categories of site listed:  abstract, action, Adam, adult, aerial, American etc. etc.

9.  Scotsman Digital Archive **

The archive of The Scotsman newspaper from its first edition in 1817 to 1900 is now available on line.  Soon the archive is to be extended to 1900, and eventually to the present day.

There is a charge** for daily (or longer) access.  I have found that when I have had a particular need for information this to be good value for money in terms of the amount of information available and the ease with which it can be accessed through keyword searches.

**  Update - February 2012  NEW

Free Access to Scotsman Digital Archive

The Scotsman Digital Archive can now be accessed through the City of Edinburgh Libraries web site  by anybody who is a member of the library.

This Edinburgh Libraries web site can also be used by people to join the library.  People joining the library do not need to live in Edinburgh.

10.  Scran

The Scran web site has been created to provide an educational resource.  It now (at 2011) has over 360,000 images including many of Edinburgh, from museums, galleries and archives.

All users can search the site and access thumbnail images on the site.  Larger images are also available to those who have paid a subscription to Scran or are exempt from subscriptions, e.g. teachers. **

I have included some photos from Scran on the EdinPhoto web site where I hae been able to obtain the authority from the copyright owner to add them to the site.  This has usually been Scotsman Publications.  Unfortunately, the dates of some of the Scotsman Publications photos on Scran do not appear to be correct.
