NEWHAVEN Early Photos |

Here is a very early photo of the Old Chain Pier. The photo comes from one of two albums of small calotype prints to have survived from the Edinburgh Calotype Club, believed to be the earliest photographic society in the world. The Old Chain Pier was built in 1821 and destroyed in a storm in 1898 The original Booking Office, at the landward end of the pier survived until 2004 when it was destroyed in a fire. It was restored and is now open under new management. Chain Pier - Newhaven © Reproduced with acknowledgement to the Trustees of the National Library of Scotland _____________________________________ The next 7 photos are all calotypes taken 1843-47 by the Hill & Adamson partnership. - David Octavius Hill was the artist. - Robert Adamson was the technician. - Their studio was at Rock House, beside the foot of the steps to Calton Hill. 1843-47 1. Some of the photographers had Newhaven fishwives' costumes that visitors to their studios could be photographed in. The usual sizes of photo produced by the photographic studios were:: - Cartes de visite (small prints mounted on card) from late-1850s to around 1900. - Cabinet prints (larger prints mounted on card) from late-1860s to around 1900. These early cartes de visite by John Ross are unusual in that they have been hand-tinted. The titles of these are "Caller Ou" and "Caller Haddies". Both are terms that appear in songs sung by the Newhaven Fishwives Choir. I don't know whether these sitters would have been genuine Newhaven fishwives or whether they might just have been dressed as fishwives. 1863 Cartes de visite
Late-1860s Cartes de visite Here are two more carte de visite from the 1860s, both from the studio of George Oman. One has been hand-coloured, but less expertly than the two above!

NEWHAVEN Postcards |
||||||||||||||
Early-20th Century Postcards Here, we have a selection of postcards by Valentine and others, most probably published between around 1900 and 1914. Some are views of individual fishwives with their baskets and creels; others are groups or families of fishwives and, in just one case, fishermen. All the cards will have used black & white photographs, but some of them have been hand-tinted.
_____________________________________ Fishwives standing and chatting in the streets was another popular subject for Newhaven postcards. These were usually hand-coloured, with some artistic licence used in the colouring. (I have several copies of the same card, but with the house colours and costume colours being quite different from one card to another.) Almost all the street scenes featuring fishwives appear to have been taken in New Street. 1. New Lane © For permission to reproduce, please contact peter.stubbs@edinphoto.org.uk 2. The photos below were taken in the final weeks of Croan's Newhaven factory, before the company moved to new premises at West Shore Road, Granton. Then I discovered that it was still trading - but the day's trading was always finished before I got out of bed! So I went along to the market at about 5am for a few days, and took the photos below: Loading fish at Newhaven Fishmarket - 1992 © Copyright: Peter Stubbs Photograph taken June 12, 1992 Fish Lorry at Newhaven Fishmarket - 1992 © Copyright: Peter Stubbs Photograph taken June 12, 1992 Taking Notes at Newhaven Fishmarket - 1992 © Copyright: Peter Stubbs Photograph taken June 12, 1992 Discussions at Newhaven Fishmarket - 1992 © Copyright: Peter Stubbs Photograph taken 31 July 1992 _____________________________________ Harry Ramsden's Restaurant beside Newhaven Harbour When I took the photos above, the whole building was a fishmarket, but this provided far more space than was needed for the trading. So the building was renovated and split into three sections: - South (near the camera): A Harry Ramsden fish restaurant. - Centre: Newhaven Heritage Museum. - North: The Fishmarket (reduced in size). NEWHAVEN A few extracts from Recollections |
1. Mending Nets "I remember the net park, with clothes poles. It was behind the school, near the Peacock Hotel, at Newhaven. The women mended the nets and we, children, earned 3d or 6d for cutting string into short lengths for them." John Stevenson, Trinity, Edinburgh: May 2005 |
2. The Fishmarket "I remember the steam boats that used to berth on the eastern side of Newhaven fishmarket, before the breakwater was built to enclose Leith Western Harbour. We used to go down to the fishmarket at 12 o'clock on a Saturday to be given a pauchle o' damaged fish. by the market boys." John Stevenson, Trinity, Edinburgh - May 2005 |
3. Newhaven Harbour "I recall Sunday jaunts to Newhaven Harbour with jeely jars for sticklebacks. We used to get on the tram outside the zoo, upstairs in the front compartment, then back home, absolutely starving. Few minnies survived the tram journey or the hike up to Carrick Knowe Hill." Ian Thomson, Lake Maquarie, New South Wales, Australia: October 11, 2010 |
© Ed Thomson, Glamis Castle, Angus, Scotland "This photo was taken in Newhaven around 1957. In fact, it was the members of Hawthornvale Ladies' whist drive weekend trip to Chester. The reason I know this is because my grandmother and grandfather are in the photo, and the other people in the picture are all well known to me and my family. All of them were family friends. My grandparents were the Olivers who stayed at No 30, Hawthornvale, Newhaven The photo brings back very happy memories of people and times gone by" Fraser Orchieson, Newhaven, Edinburgh: February 9, 2008 |
4. Dressed as a Newhaven Fisherman © Reproduced with acknowledgement to Graham Lonie, Antigua, Caribbean "Here is a picture of myself in front of No. 17 Annfield Street in 1953. I was dressed up as a Newhaven fisherman and participated in a Pageant for the visit of newly-crowned Queen Elizabeth II (ahem, Queen Elizabeth I of Scotland!). Part of the event was a re-enactment of the landing of Mary, Queen of Scots at Newhaven Harbour." Graham D Lonie (Scotty), Antigua, Leeward Islands, Caribbean October 20, 2007 |
5. Market Buffet © Reproduced with acknowledgement to Walter Lyle Hume, Cowes, Isle of Wight, England "My father had a Café in Pier Place Newhaven called the Market Buffet, more or less opposite the police box shown." Irene Day (née Sharrock): Wigan, Lancashire, England: May 18, 2008 |

7. The Oyster Woman "Of the many old photos on this site, I'm sure, was of my Great Great Great Grandmother, Barbara Johnstone Flucker (the oyster woman) from the Hill & Adamson collection of calotypes." Terry Amiel, Idaho Falls, Idaho, USA: message posted in EdinPhoto guest book Mar 6, 2009 |
8. Starbank Park "How different things are these days, from when I was young and lived in Edinburgh. On Easter Sunday, after church and lunch, we always had a visit to Starbank Park, down near to Newhaven. My, it was always so very busy, with so many youngsters rolling their Easter Eggs and not the chocolate ones either - hard boiled real eggs, many decorated as best our parents could do with whatever they had, and yet we were thrilled to bits!!!" Avril Finlayson Smith, Bendigo, Victoria, Australia: Message posted in EdinPhoto guestbook, April 24, 2011 |
9. Gaun Fishin' Tae Newhaven "Bright an sunny mornin’s, up early wis the game, Fishin’ tackle ready aff we go again. We trekked tae Newhaven alang the shore path. We walked in oor bareies, we were happy lads. We clambered up the steps frae the shore tae the road, Aw puffed oot wi' excitement, a squad o’ Granton toads Newhaven set in oor sites, we’d scoot alang the street Intae the market tae hunt fer tasty treats. We’d put them on the hooks, and throw them in the sea, Tae try and catch a mackerel - great fun had we. When bait ran doon aff we’d go, roond tae the box cleaners Jist tae say hello! The box cleaners were really guid, wi'd stop tae hae a fag. So we could delve intae the cleanin’ tubs tae fill oor bait bags. Settlin’ doon tae fish again wi’ some fresh bait. The catch wid vary quite a bit, but the fun wis really great Wi a mackerel wrigglin’ on yer line, ha'en taken a tasty bait Guid fun it wis, meetin’ ither laddies, Tellin' fishy stories o’ fishing trips wi’ daddy Some came frae sunny Leith and far away Lochend Tae fish fer silver mackerel, such happy days we’d spend Aw they things are great fer laddies growing up, Fishin’ at Newhaven, that great wee fishin’ hub."
