History of the Journal

Edinburgh Photographic Society set up a library at its new premises in 1892 and subscribed to several photographic journals including Amateur Photographer.

This journal is still being published today, in 2006, as a weekly photographic magazine.  It has a long history.  It has incorporated and merged with several other photographic magazines over the last 120 years:

October 10,  1884.

Vol 1, No 1 of Amateur Photographer was published by Hazell, Watson & Viney, London.  The journal was published weekly

January 1892

Incorporated Photographic Reporter (a monthly journal from the same publisher, published under that title from August 1890 and previously as
 Photographic Societies' Reporter from January 31, 1889).

May 12
1908 

Merged with Photographic News (Cassell, Peffer and Galpin since 1858) to form
Amateur Photographer and Photographic News.

Short title: Amateur Photographer.

June 19
1918

Merged with Photography and Focus, a magazine formed in 1908 from the merger of Photography (1888) and Focus (1908) to form
Amateur Photographer and Photography

Short title: Amateur Photographer.

August 3
1927

Absorbed New Photographer to form
Amateur Photographer and Cinematographer

Short title: Amateur Photographer.

June 20
1945

Title became Amateur Photographer (London, England: 1945)
Short title: Amateur Photographer.
