Opening
remarks
At
the opening of the 1951 Exhibition, Alexander Dunbar’s commented on craftsmanship:
"In
short, the chemist, the physicist, the lens-maker, and the engineer have
taken the guess-work out of photography, have made order where before there
was disorder, have cleaned up the whole process and have given the
photographer materials , and the equipment to use them, beyond the wildest
dreams of fifty years ago.
Well
indeed has the scientist done his job. He has made photography
very easy! “No need to think. No complicated processes, all
plain sailing - just use what I tell you to use, in the way I ell you to use
it, and you will get a good photograph.”
He
is perfectly correct - you will. You will get a good photograph and if you
are satisfied with that and pursue the matter no further the scientist will
be able to chalk up another victory against his antagonist the craftsman, or
the craftsman who might have been." |
