Exhibition at 38 Castle Street
British Journal of
Photography gave two reports on the Exhibition, which was open from 2
to 23 February 1895, or until the end of February if it proved
successful.
The BJP reported:
- The exhibition opened at
38 Castle Street on Saturday 2 February with a very successful smoking
concert.
- It will be open to the
public, free, every day from 10am until 10pm until 23 February.
- The exhibition comprised
landscapes, figure studies, portraits from the old and familiar silver
prints to the modern carbon, together with a large collection of
lantern slides
- There were about 90
entries in 8 competitive classes,
comprising about 175 photographs and 120 lantern slides, together with
a number of very fine works sent for exhibition only.
- Amongst the non
competitive works were two very fine portraits of the late Colonel
CGH Kinnear, the
inventor of the modern form of camera bellows and the late
John Moffat,
one of the fathers of photography in Edinburgh, by Mr
FP Moffat, one of the
Vice Presidents.
- There were also some very
beautiful works by Messrs William
Crooke, W Lamond Howie,
James Patrick and the late
Alexander Ayton jun.
